Stella McCartney commits to the Parley AIR Strategy and integrates Ocean Plastic™ into collections
During our celebration of World Oceans Day 2017, we announced an extended collaboration with Stella McCartney in the movement to make peace with our life support system. The brand commits to the Parley AIR Strategy and creating products from Ocean Plastic™ with the goal of catalyzing awareness, action, and change in the fashion and luxury industry.
Since launching in 2001, the Stella McCartney brand has been deeply rooted in its commitments as a responsible and modern company. Our vision to end environmental threats through creative collaboration, eco-innovation, and alternative materials resonates with the ethos for which Stella McCartney is known, and begins its new chapter: ocean conservation. Together we will harness Stella's leadership in ecologically conscious design to set a new standard for the protection of our oceans — and for the fashion industry's participation within it.
“Fashion is an industry that makes a significant impact on the health of the planet, and on its life support system — the oceans. Our goal has always been to challenge ourselves and the industry to do better, to continually ask ourselves how we can improve. We want to be responsible and accountable for the items we make and the ways we make them. And we need to start somewhere in order to progress. This partnership with Parley is another chapter in our journey.”
“We are at war with the oceans. And if we win, we lose it all. It’s time to make peace between mankind and the sea. No social group is suited better for this challenge than the creative class. Stella McCartney is not only a fantastic designer; she is a pioneer of creative activism. Her work has changed the industry. She will expedite our strategy of making Ocean Plastic™ the new standard for the fashion and luxury industry.”
Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley for the Oceans
Following the earlier launch of a footwear product made from Ocean Plastic through the adidas by Stella McCartney collaboration, Stella now commits to replacing any existing woven or recycled polyester, found mostly in shoes, bags and outerwear as an alternative to leather, with Parley upcycled materials. The ultimate goal is to reinvent the problem material itself: plastic. By positioning the use of recycled materials as a high-end alternative to virgin plastic, we can set a new trend of design with intention and purpose within the luxury space.
