A GLOBAL FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE TO PROTECT OCEANS, CLIMATE AND LIFE AGAINST PLASTIC POLLUTION, CLIMATE CHANGE AND BIODIVERSITY LOSS

ART BASEL AND PARLEY FOR THE OCEANS ARE TEAMING UP AND CALLING FOR SUPPORT TO ADDRESS THE DEVASTATING IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE, PLASTIC POLLUTION AND BIODIVERSITY LOSS ON MARINE ECOSYSTEMS AND COASTAL COMMUNITIES. WITH THE BACKING OF RENOWNED ARTISTS, GALLERIES AND INSTITUTIONS, WE AIM TO MAKE A LASTING DIFFERENCE BY SPREADING AWARENESS ABOUT THE OCEANS, RAISING FUNDS FOR THE CAUSE AND ENABLING INNOVATIVE ARTISTIC IDEAS.

We started Parley over a decade ago and have built a global organization to protect our oceans, the climate's regulating lifeforce. Now we are returning to where it all started — to Art Basel, to the art community. And it is here, where we are asking for support to rapidly grow our global impact and scale our programs.

CYRILL GUTSCH, CEO & FOUNDER OF PARLEY

Harnessing the combined power of art, environmental activism and eco-innovation, this fundraising initiative will inspire long term change, protect the oceans and address the devastating impacts of climate change, plastic pollution and biodiversity loss.

Art for the Oceans will see Parley’s Global Cleanup Network remove 1 pound of plastic for every $1 donated through the program. The initiative will also support education and ocean programs designed to support Parley’s mission of transforming harmful and toxic materials, products and systems to create a better future where clean and healthy oceans connect us all.

Parley’s Global Cleanup Network

Plastic is a design failure that pollutes every part of our planet, from the highest summit to the deepest trench. It's in the water we drink, the air we breathe, the food we eat and our own bodies. Meanwhile, plastic production continues to climb and a truckload of trash enters the oceans every minute.

Parley’s Global Cleanup Network operates worldwide, taking direct action against marine plastic pollution, developing education programs and building out upcycling infrastructure. Parley teams and partners clear plastic waste from beaches, remote islands, rivers, mangroves and coral reefs — and intercept plastic waste in coastal and island communities. Collaboration is at the core of Parley’s history and future. Our impact is collectively achieved with the help of many individuals, organizations and communities who share our mission to protect the oceans and work tirelessly to drive change at a local, national and global level.

Parley’s teams, collaborators and volunteers share our vision for solutions and champion the Parley AIR Strategy: AVOID. INTERCEPT. REDESIGN. Going beyond regular cleanups, we respond to plastic emergencies, create education and employment opportunities and implement programs to end the cycle of pollution.

Parley for the Oceans was founded in the heart of the art community, with early supporters like Julian Schnabel and Ed Ruscha creating new work in solidarity with our organization and our cause. Parley has since expanded our program and collaborated on projects ranging from underwater sculptures to sustainable surfboards with leading contemporary artists including Katharina Grosse, Doug Aitken, Bharti Kher, Jenny Holzer, Pipilotti Rist, Walton Ford, Rosemarie Trockel, Keiichi Tanaami, Kenny Scharf and others.

Fostering collaboration within and beyond the art world, Parley works with artists and galleries to raise awareness for the beauty and fragility of our oceans – and collaborates on large-scale projects to help end their destruction.

“I painted ‘Oceans, Climate, Life’ to announce Parley and their first big summit at the United Nations, June 2015 in New York. ‘Climate’ — a painting of Danny Fuller surfing at the pipeline — hung on the side of the UN building to share the urgency of the climate crisis. We are now showing all three works during Art Basel Miami in front of the Bass Museum in support of Parley’s work to change the destiny of our planet.”
