Our flagship country program is tackling plastic pollution throughout this dispersed island nation. Parley Maldives works directly with local groups and island communities to strengthen existing conservation efforts and introduce new programs where necessary. They are currently focused on implementing Parley AIR, intercepting and recycling plastic waste and educating the next generation.

“We are people of the ocean but we have never really felt the ocean. We have taken it for granted. Curriculum change, collection change and behavior change are all vitally important.”

Shaahina Ali – Parley Maldives

COLLABORATIon is key

The government of the Republic of the Maldives has endorsed and adopted the Parley AIR Strategy as the framework for achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals and creating a Blue Economy as Parley’s first ‘Future Island Nation.’ Parley Maldives has formed various collaborations with different government bodies and state-owned corporations to implement the strategy nationwide and apply our learnings to other island nations.

As the largest industry in the country, tourism plays a major role in the consumption of single-use plastics in the Maldives. With over 1 million arrivals per year, tourists, as well as the services provided to them, are the single highest generator of waste per capita. The Parley Maldives Tourism Program works closely with the industry throughout the Maldives in order to implement the AIR Strategy, and incorporate resorts, liveaboards, guesthouses and tour operators in our programs. Meanwhile, Parley Maldives also works with boat operators throughout the country and targets the complacent dumping of plastic into the sea and strategizes ways to intercept waste in collaboration with fishing boats, fishing companies and the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION

In partnership with local schools, NGOs and the Ministry of Education, Parley Maldives develops and integrates programs to empower young people. Students learn about different types of plastic waste and ocean threats, participate in the recycling process, and develop habits they can start practicing at home and in their communities. Youth are also given the chance to explore the underwater world – something that many Maldivians (surprisingly) never get the chance to. Our collaborative programs have helped more than 100,000 youths and their parents go swimming and snorkeling.

Intercepting Plastic Waste

The Maldives is challenged in unimaginable ways to manage waste from millions of visiting tourists and a population of more than half a million. Parley Maldives focuses on removing plastics from waste streams, preventing it from burning in landfills, and implementing the Parley AIR Strategy nationwide.

Parley Maldives also works to reduce reliance on single-use plastics, intercept sources of plastic waste and prevent it from entering the oceans in the first place. To do this, we’ve introduced plastic interception and baling sites in island communities and more than 70 schools, collaborative cleanups on affected coastlines – and the first-ever recycling center and innovation lab in the capital, Malé.

The Parley Global Cleanup Network works to protect marine environments from plastic pollution and other threats. Through collaborative cleanups with local businesses and organizations, our teams intercept plastic waste from beaches, remote islands, rivers, mangroves and coastal communities. With cleanups in 30 countries so far and counting, the Network also works on local education, awareness campaigns and government engagement to drive change.

Each country team shares our vision for healthier oceans globally, and works locally to champion the Parley AIR Strategy in their nation. As of 2022, Parley has engaged over 720,000 volunteers globally, conducted more than 21,000 cleanup and education events and intercepted 1.1 million kg of plastic.
