With a coastline that encompasses the Amazon River Basin and stretches over 4600 miles along the Atlantic Ocean, Brazil is a vast place to work, with many different coastal environments. Our country team works from Florianópolis and Rio to address marine plastic pollution, conduct remote island cleanups, respond to oil spills and create educational programs on and off the water.

“Only by being aware of nature’s beauty and importance CAN we create new dialogues and act together ON
solutions to protect the Oceans and our planet.”

Thais Goncalves – Parley Brazil

BEACH AND COASTAL CLEANUPS

Since launching in February 2019, Parley Brazil has conducted over 50 cleanups in different parts of Brazil – from the famous beaches of Rio de Janiero to the remote islands of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago. Collaborating with an array of government agencies, local NGOs and scientists, the Brazil team have intercepted over 20,000lbs of marine debris so far. Each event is coupled with awareness sessions and creative engagement activities – providing learning and networking opportunities for like-minded volunteers.

MISIONES COLLABORATION

Iguazu National Park lies on the border of Argentina and Brazil, surrounded by rich, biodiverse rainforest and home to hundreds of huge waterfalls. Parley teams from Brazil and Argentina met up in the region to host cleanups, visit local communities and explore an agroforestry project run by Fundacion Agroecologica Iguazu.

OIL SPILL RESPONSE

In August 2019, mysterious blobs of oil began washing up along a 1400 mile stretch of Brazil’s northeast coastline – affecting beaches, reefs, mangroves and coastal communities. Parley worked with Corona, Salve Maracaipe and other local partners to support local cleanup efforts and safely store the collected oil – and teamed up with Brazilian journalist Leandro Barbosa to share the story globally.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

In February 2019, Parley Brazil began its first program in Fernando de Noronha, one of the few oceanic archipelagos in the Atlantic. The islands are an oasis for marine life, an important focus of diversity and biological richness, with outstanding endemism of vertebrates and great importance for seabirds in the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

Since then, the Parley Brazil team has created different educational actions based on the AIR Strategy, together with the local community and the administration both on the island and elsewhere in Brazil. Recently, in the wake of the global movement for social justice, the team partnered with a diverse group of educators and activists from different communities in the country – which is facing its history of colonialism tied to environmental exploitation.

The Parley Global Cleanup Network works to protect marine environments from plastic pollution and other threats. Through collaborative cleanups with local businesses and organizations, our teams intercept plastic waste from beaches, remote islands, rivers, mangroves and coastal communities. With cleanups in 30 countries so far and counting, the Network also works on local education, awareness campaigns and government engagement to drive change.

Each country team shares our vision for healthier oceans globally, and works locally to champion the Parley AIR Strategy in their nation. As of 2022, Parley has engaged over 720,000 volunteers globally, conducted more than 21,000 cleanup and education events and intercepted 1.1 million kg of plastic.
